The Revolution In Real Time

May 11th, 2009

Horloge du comptoir

Social Media isn’t new…  it’s been around forever.  What has changed are the tools.  Remember those old school techniques of social media.. the telephone, writing letters back and forth, morse code, etc…   The tools of this new revolution are nifty little online sites like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin & hundreds more.  Obviously there are features of this “new way” that have spurned their growth online.  My favorite feature is real time.  Why do I love real time so much?  Because it’s connected to these:

  • real time search
  • real time communication
  • real time feedback
  • real time listening
  • real time engagement
  • real time responses

Taking advantage of real time has been made easy by life stream services like Twitter, Facebook and FriendFeed.  My favorite is Twitter’s real time search… you can search the “twittersphere” @ search.twitter.com, go ahead and type in your brand, company or industry.  What did you find?  Are people talking about you or your company?

Continue to listen and find ways to engage your customers in real time… they’ll appreciate knowing that you are listening!  In the next post I’ll talk about some tools you can use to monitor in real time.
